Replacing the heating systems in households saves money and reduces harmful emissions into the air

In order to promote the REPLACE activity and raise public awareness regarding the transition to heating systems based on renewable energy sources, the ENOVA project team visited examples of best practices, i.e. 7 households that recognized the importance of switching from heating systems based on fossil fuels to heating systems based on renewable sources energy, mainly on pellet stove systems, and distinguished themselves by “opening the door” to all citizens who are interested in being informed about this type of replacement.

REPLACE’s final conference & market situation in European regions – topics at the consortium meeting 1. February 2023

The REPLACE final conference will take place on 21 March. Among other things, the topics to be addressed were discussed at the REPLACE consortium meeting on 1.2.2023. The multiple-crises and key findings of the project on possibilities how to react to them locally to nevertheless facilitate the phase-out of oil and natural gas towards sustainable heating and cooling in Europe will be the focus of the REPLACE final conference. In addition, the barriers and challenges that exist, as well as possible supporting framework conditions when replacing old, conventional fossil fuel systems with renewable ones will be discussed. The event will take place in a hybrid format, with the possibility to participate on-site in Brussels, but also online.

Alleviating heat market distortions and supply insecurities: REPLACE initiatives as Best Practice

Biomass micro-grids supply several households with heat. Installing a centralized heating system like that can help to overcome the limited availability of installers. Further REPLACE initiatives include e.g. joint purchase actions, local subsidy programs or pre-feasibility studies.

Alleviating the clean heat transition distortions and supply insecurities in the short-term

Among the most efficient short-term strategies to alleviate the risk of price and supply exposure is to reduce energy demand rapidly. The following list shows behavioural or minor investment (mostly) do-it-yourself (DIY) measures that have the potential to deliver the stated percent reductions of the overall space-heating bill immediately1.

100% clean heating in the Oberland. The Kluge family from Eberfing receives the first award from Energiewende Oberland.

The “Clean Heating” award, designed by Energiewende Oberland (EWO) together with the region’s climate protection managers, has been available since autumn 2022. The first household receiving the smart wooden plate from the EWO is the Kluge family from Eberfing, who heats with a combination of heat pump and solar power. The award was developed as part of the EU-funded REPLACE heating exchange project and is intended to honour people who heat climate friendly and to encourage others to follow suit.

REPLACE highlight Bosnia and Herzegovina: Bringing innovations in times of the global energy crisis – REPLACE pre-feasibility studies help to overcome obstacles to climate friendly heating

Replacing a heating system is a complex process. It requires many factors to be taken into account so that the replacement results in the best and most efficient solution. REPLACE activities and tools offer an innovative approach to the replacement process that is easy to understand and accessible not only to professionals but also to end users.

The development of pre-feasibility studies for the replacement of the heating system is one of the innovative activities that was presented and made available to the end users in Sarajevo Canton (the target region in BiH) for the first time – completely free of charge. The studies show heating systems recommended for a specific household as well as benefits of the replacement.
